Alonzo Menifield’s broken-thumb upset complicates the next betting read
Menifield cashed as high as +205 at UFC 331, but the injury and a clinch-heavy decision create more uncertainty than a clean upgrade.
Alonzo Menifield delivered the upset at UFC 331 under circumstances that immediately complicate his next market. Cageside Press reported that Menifield defeated Iwo Baraniewski by split decision after breaking his thumb in the first round, with two judges awarding Menifield 29-28; the outlet also noted that Baraniewski had spent less than five cumulative minutes in the UFC across three previous appearances.
The result rewarded anyone who took Menifield at plus money. An event-day snapshot across seven sportsbooks showed him between +180 and +205, while Baraniewski ranged from -227 to -250. This was not a marginal upset produced by a narrow disagreement in the market. Bettors were being asked to lay a substantial price on a fighter who had never entered a second UFC round.
That missing experience became part of the fight. Baraniewski reportedly started quickly, landed clean right hands, worked from the clinch and found takedowns. The pace then deteriorated. Menifield remained functional through the hand injury, pressured late and did enough work to take two scorecards.
The betting lesson is not simply that the veteran was undervalued. Menifield won through attrition and late initiative rather than imposing one consistent phase from the opening bell.
Menifield found a route beyond the early knockout
Menifield’s established finishing profile made his decision path important. Across 20 archived bouts, he has 13 wins: seven by knockout or TKO, two by submission and four by decision. His 69% finish rate on wins comes from a meaningful career sample, but it does not mean every successful performance must be built around an early stoppage.
His recent results had already started to show more than one route. Before UFC 331, Menifield’s previous five included a first-round knockout of Zhang Mingyang and decision wins over Oumar Sy and Julius Walker. The losses to Volkan Oezdemir and Azamat Murzakanov both came by knockout or TKO.
