Buckley-Malott Cleared at 170.5, Leaving UFC Edmonton’s Real Question in the Matchup
The main event is official, but a routine weigh-in does little to settle a tight market shaped by Buckley’s defensive advantages and Malott’s cleaner offensive numbers.
Joaquin Buckley and Mike Malott have cleared the final administrative hurdle for their five-round welterweight main event at UFC Edmonton.
BJPenn.com reported that both fighters weighed 170.5 pounds Friday, part of a card on which all 26 competitors made their marks. The result keeps Saturday’s headliner intact at Rogers Place and removes the immediate risks attached to a miss: renegotiation, a catchweight or a cancellation.
For bettors, that is confirmation rather than a new handicapping signal. Making weight does not establish conditioning, recovery quality or physical condition after the cut. With no reported miss or withdrawal, the case on either side still rests on how Buckley’s reach, defensive wrestling and power interact with Malott’s more accurate, more varied offense.

A narrow moneyline demands line shopping
Malott is favored across all seven observed books, but the price is not uniform. His best available number is -125 at BetOnline, Caesars, BetUS and Bovada. The market extends to -129 at BetRivers, -135 at DraftKings and -140 at FanDuel.

Buckley ranges from +104 at BetRivers to +114 at DraftKings, with +112 available at FanDuel. That 10-cent gap matters in a matchup without a large posted separation. A Buckley bettor accepting +104 while +114 is available gives away price without gaining a different underlying position. The same principle applies to Malott: laying -140 when -125 is posted elsewhere materially raises the required win rate.
The weigh-in itself does not justify chasing either side. Both men hit the same number, and the packet contains no evidence of a difficult cut or compromised recovery. What changed Friday is event certainty, not the technical matchup.
Malott enters at 14-2-1 and has won four straight since his third-round loss to Neil Magny. That run includes decisions over Trevin Giles and Kevin Holland, a second-round stoppage of Charles Radtke and a third-round stoppage of Gilbert Burns. Buckley, 21-8, has lost consecutive decisions to Kamaru Usman and Sean Brady after beating Nursulton Ruziboev, Stephen Thompson and Colby Covington.
