Umar Nurmagomedov’s ‘No More Wrestling’ Pivot Needs Proof Before Bettors Reprice Him
Nurmagomedov says he wants to chase knockouts after the first stoppage loss of his career, but his underlying production still describes a control-led decision fighter.

Umar Nurmagomedov is talking about rebuilding his game around knockouts after Song Yadong handed him the first stoppage loss of his career. The declaration is notable. It is not yet evidence of a transformation.
BJPenn.com reported that manager Ali Abdelaziz relayed Nurmagomedov’s new “no more wrestling” mindset following the second-round knockout defeat on Aug. 29. Taken literally, that would mean shelving the most productive and repeatable layer of a style that has carried Nurmagomedov to a 20-2 record and the No. 4 bantamweight ranking.
For bettors, the immediate response should be restraint. Nurmagomedov has no next opponent or booking in the packet, and one post-loss statement cannot establish how he will divide his striking, wrestling and control work in competition. The potentially affected markets are clear—takedowns, significant strikes, method of victory, round betting and distance-related props—but none should move on rhetoric alone.
His record is built on control and decisions
Nurmagomedov’s numbers do not describe a knockout-dependent fighter. Across 10 archived bouts, he has eight wins: five by decision, two by submission and one by knockout or TKO. The resulting 38 percent finish rate applies only to those eight wins, a modest sample that should not be stretched into a universal forecast.
The mechanics behind those results matter more than the label. Nurmagomedov averages 3.94 takedowns per 15 minutes with 46 percent accuracy. His 10 bouts with round data contain 35 completed takedowns and 51 minutes of control across 28 rounds. That is more than a defensive fallback. It is a major source of scoring, positional security and pace management.
His recent results reinforce the point. The wins over Cory Sandhagen, Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo all went to unanimous decision. Nurmagomedov’s loss to Merab Dvalishvili also lasted five rounds before the Song knockout broke that pattern. Four of his five most recent bouts therefore reached the scorecards, including both five-round assignments before Shanghai.
