Petr Yan-Merab Dvalishvili III Puts Takedown Resistance Against Relentless Pace
Yan’s improved trilogy position rests on whether his 86 percent takedown defense can keep Dvalishvili’s pressure from becoming control, while a divided market makes price shopping essential.

MMA Fighting opened live coverage of Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili’s third meeting Saturday at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi, billing it as the bantamweight championship co-main event. The trilogy arrives tied 1-1: Dvalishvili won their first fight by unanimous decision in March 2023, and Yan answered with a unanimous decision in December 2025.
That second result changed the betting question. This is no longer a projection of whether Yan can withstand Dvalishvili’s pace in theory. He has already reversed the matchup once. The issue now is whether that reversal reflects a repeatable defensive mechanism or a result that the market has priced too aggressively.
Yan is the UFC bantamweight champion in the current PropBetEdge rankings and sits No. 4 pound-for-pound. Dvalishvili is the division’s No. 1 contender and No. 9 pound-for-pound. Both are 322 days removed from their previous bout, so neither holds a recorded activity advantage entering the rubber match.

The trilogy turns on what happens after Dvalishvili shoots
Dvalishvili’s game is built around repeated entries, accumulated control and enough striking activity to keep opponents working between grappling exchanges. Across 17 archived bouts and 60 tracked rounds, he has landed 119 takedowns and generated 107 minutes of control. His career rate is 5.97 takedowns per 15 minutes.

That volume matters more than his 35 percent takedown accuracy might suggest. A failed attempt does not necessarily end the sequence; it can force a defensive reaction, carry an opponent toward the fence or create another entry. Dvalishvili does not need every shot to become extended top control for his wrestling to alter pace and positioning.
Yan presents a difficult countermechanism. His career takedown defense stands at 86 percent, 10 percentage points above Dvalishvili’s 76 percent. Yan has also landed 32 takedowns of his own at 49 percent accuracy across 16 archived bouts. He does not need to out-wrestle Dvalishvili, but credible counters and reversals can make Dvalishvili pay an energy cost without receiving control in return.

Tsarukyan’s decision removes one speculative matchup while leaving bettors with a proven UFC profile—and no booked fight to price.
