Stephen Thompson’s farewell fight with Charles Radtke turns on range versus control
Thompson chose an opponent he believes deserves an opportunity, but the betting mechanics center on whether Radtke can turn a low-volume striking fight into a sustained grappling test.

Stephen Thompson has attached a broader purpose to the last booking of his UFC career. Sherdog reported that Thompson chose Charles Radtke for his retirement bout because established veterans once gave him similar opportunities to advance.
The welterweights are scheduled for three rounds on the UFC 334 preliminary card Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden. The explanation gives the matchup a clean narrative, but it does not give bettors a predictive variable. There is no measurable connection between Thompson’s desire to elevate another fighter and how he will manage distance, defend takedowns or hold up after a long absence.
Those are the questions that matter. Thompson, 43, will enter with a three-inch reach advantage, a substantial edge in striking volume and 446 days between fights. Radtke, 36, has been out for 173 days and owns the more active wrestling profile. The matchup is not simply an old striker against a younger opponent. It is a fight between Thompson’s range-based volume and Radtke’s ability to compress space without absorbing too much on the way in.
Thompson still owns the volume and range levers
Thompson has landed 4.05 significant strikes per minute across his career, compared with Radtke’s 2.50. That 1.55-strike gap is reinforced by Thompson’s three-inch advantages in both height and reach: he stands 6 feet with a 75-inch reach, while Radtke is 5-foot-9 with a 72-inch reach.

The difference is not accuracy. Radtke has landed 53% of his significant attempts, seven percentage points above Thompson’s career mark. It is activity and shot distribution. Thompson has landed 1,293 significant strikes across 66 tracked rounds, including 305 to the body and 131 to the legs. Radtke has landed 151 over 14 rounds, with 128 going to the head, eight to the body and 15 to the legs.
That profile gives Thompson more ways to accumulate offense if he can maintain open space. He does not need every exchange to produce a damaging head shot; body and leg work can keep his output moving while forcing Radtke to cross distance repeatedly. Significant-strike and round-total markets are therefore more relevant than the retirement storyline.
