Tim Elliott’s upset of Édgar Cháirez exposed the matchup the moneyline missed

Tim Elliott did not need to become a better kickboxer than Édgar Cháirez. He needed to keep the fight from remaining a kickboxing match.

That distinction decided their three-round catchweight bout Saturday at Noche UFC in Glendale. MMA News reported that Cháirez hurt Elliott with a right hand in the opening seconds, but Elliott recovered, answered with an overhand left and repeatedly brought the fight to the floor; even after Cháirez threatened with a third-round guillotine and found late striking success, Elliott secured another takedown in the final minute and won a unanimous decision.

The result moved the 39-year-old Elliott to 22-14-1 and gave him three wins in his past four appearances. More important for bettors, it showed why a matchup built around visible advantages in age, reach and striking could still turn on one less glamorous variable: Elliott could repeatedly initiate wrestling against an opponent whose historical takedown defence sat at 47%.

The pre-fight market paid for Cháirez’s cleaner advantages

The moneyline treated Cháirez as a clear favorite four days before the fight. His available prices ranged from -200 at Caesars and FanDuel to -220 at BetMGM. Elliott was available from +154 at FanDuel to +181 at BetOnline.ag, with DraftKings and BetMGM each dealing +180.

There were obvious reasons for that position. Cháirez was nine years younger and owned a five-inch reach advantage despite both fighters standing 5-foot-7. He landed 3.76 significant strikes per minute with 46% accuracy, compared with Elliott’s 3.51 at 43%. Cháirez had also won three straight before Saturday: two first-round submissions and a split decision.
