Melissa Gatto’s Point-Deduction Draw Exposes the Risk in Pricing Her as a Pure Finisher
Gatto’s majority draw with Ernesta Kareckaite preserved her uneven recent record but reinforced a more useful betting read: her fights increasingly hinge on clinch position, takedown outcomes and late-round control.
Melissa Gatto left UFC Vegas 122 with a majority draw rather than a win, but the result does not cleanly describe the fight. Cageside Press reported that Ernesta Kareckaite’s first-round fence grab brought an immediate point deduction, turning what two judges otherwise saw as a 10-9 Kareckaite round into a 9-9; the official cards were 29-27, 28-28 and 28-28.
That foul changed the result. It should not erase the information underneath it.
Gatto was the modest pre-fight favorite across the available market, ranging from -115 at BetMGM to -129 at BetRivers when prices were observed earlier Saturday. Kareckaite ranged from -105 to +107. Bettors were therefore asked to pay a relatively small premium for Gatto in a matchup that became difficult to score because takedown attempts, reversals and clinch exchanges repeatedly produced messy positional outcomes.
For future markets, the important distinction is between the official draw and the process that created it.
