Merab Dvalishvili’s Reset for Petr Yan Targets the Trilogy’s Deciding Variable
Dvalishvili says he abandoned his pressure-wrestling identity in the rematch, but Yan’s 86 percent takedown defence makes the proposed correction more complicated than simply shooting more often.

Merab Dvalishvili has identified the tactical error he intends to correct against Petr Yan: he spent too much of their rematch standing in front of Yan and exchanging punches instead of forcing the wrestling-heavy fight that defines his best work. MMA Fighting reported that Dvalishvili plans to return to his usual approach when they meet again at UFC 333 on Oct. 24 in Abu Dhabi.
That diagnosis matters because the scheduled five-round trilogy pits the bantamweight champion against the division’s No. 1-ranked contender, and the available market has already made Yan a clear favorite. Prices observed Sept. 8 ranged from Yan -172 at FanDuel to -190 at Caesars, while Dvalishvili ranged from +140 at FanDuel to +150 at DraftKings.
Those prices predate Dvalishvili’s public explanation. His comments therefore introduce a new tactical signal, not confirmation of something already reflected in the observed market. Whether that signal creates value depends on execution: Dvalishvili must turn renewed wrestling intent into sustained entries against one of the stronger defensive wrestlers in the matchup database.
Dvalishvili’s proposed correction fits his established winning process
Dvalishvili’s statistical identity leaves little ambiguity about where he is most differentiated. He averages 5.97 takedowns per 15 minutes and has landed 119 takedowns across 60 tracked rounds. His 107 minutes of control nearly triple Yan’s 42 minutes, despite the fighters having similarly deep round samples: 17 bouts and 60 rounds for Dvalishvili, 16 bouts and 58 rounds for Yan.

The contrast on the feet is less favorable. Yan lands 5.16 significant strikes per minute at 54 percent accuracy. Dvalishvili lands 4.42 at 41 percent. Yan also owns 10 knockdowns in the tracked sample to Dvalishvili’s one. A prolonged, orderly striking match gives Yan access to his cleaner offensive layer and the more credible knockdown threat.
That is why Dvalishvili’s admission changes the handicap mechanically. Returning to repeat takedown attempts could disrupt Yan’s stance, reduce the length of clean boxing exchanges and create control time even when individual shots fail. Dvalishvili does not need every attempt to produce a takedown for the approach to matter; the entries themselves can force defensive reactions and make the fight less comfortable for Yan.
