Merab Dvalishvili’s Yan Problem Is About Converting Pressure, Not Creating More of It
TJ Dillashaw’s proposed fix could alter Dvalishvili’s takedown and striking markets, but bettors need evidence of a tactical change before pricing it in.

Merab Dvalishvili does not need another source of activity. He needs the activity he already creates to produce a different defensive reaction.
Bloody Elbow reported that TJ Dillashaw wants Dvalishvili to use takedown threats to create strikes, rather than treating his hands primarily as a route into wrestling exchanges; the report also put Dvalishvili at five successful takedowns on 58 attempts against Petr Yan at UFC 333, an 8.6 percent conversion rate.
That distinction matters after consecutive five-round decision losses to Yan. Dvalishvili remains the No. 1-ranked bantamweight and No. 9 pound-for-pound fighter, but the trilogy defeat left him 12 days removed from a second straight result in which his established pressure game failed to carry the scorecards.
For bettors, Dillashaw’s diagnosis is not evidence that Dvalishvili has changed. It is a framework for identifying a change if it appears in his next booking.

The volume is established; the conversion is the issue
Dvalishvili’s career profile already describes one of the division’s most persistent wrestling workloads. He averages 5.97 takedowns per 15 minutes with 35 percent career accuracy. Across 18 archived bouts and 65 rounds with complete round data, he has landed 124 takedowns and accumulated 109 minutes of control.
The problem exposed by the latest Yan fight was not an inability to reach the legs. It was the declining value of each attempt. If an opponent can defend, reset and resume striking without paying a second price, repeated entries can become effort-heavy actions that do not generate control or damaging offense.
