Merab Dvalishvili’s Yan Admission Puts the Trilogy’s Takedown Battle Back at Center Stage
Dvalishvili says he recognized early that his wrestling would not carry the rematch, sharpening the central betting question before their five-round trilogy bout at UFC 333.

Merab Dvalishvili has supplied a blunt diagnosis of his December loss to Petr Yan just before they meet for a third time: once the takedowns stopped working, he no longer saw a route to victory.
Bloody Elbow reported that Dvalishvili traced that realization to a failed second-round attempt, after Yan had defended 27 of 29 takedowns across the rematch. The disclosure lands ahead of their five-round bantamweight bout at UFC 333 on Oct. 24 in Abu Dhabi, where Yan enters as the reigning champion and Dvalishvili as the division’s No. 1 contender, although the announced booking is not classified as a title fight.
The immediate betting implication is not that Dvalishvili lacked confidence then or lacks it now. It is that the rematch exposed a mechanical failure with cascading effects. Dvalishvili’s offense depends on repeated entries, chain wrestling and the pressure those attempts create. When Yan denied the first layer and made each exchange expensive, Dvalishvili had to spend energy without securing the control that normally repays that cost.
That is the trilogy’s core handicap. Can Dvalishvili change the entry process, or is he returning to a matchup in which his highest-volume weapon has already been neutralized?
