Wang Cong’s eye-poke explanation does not erase her decision-heavy betting profile
Cong says impaired vision delayed her offense against Natalia Silva, but her broader UFC data still points bettors toward pace and duration markets rather than a simple rebound narrative.
Wang Cong has offered a reason for the slow start that left her chasing Natalia Silva across the final rounds of their five-round UFC 332 main event.
Bloody Elbow reported that Cong said eye pokes obstructed her vision and slowed her entry into the fight, after Dana White criticized her lack of early urgency. All three judges awarded Silva the decision. Silva swept the first two rounds on every scorecard, while Cong took the fifth unanimously.
That explanation matters, but it does not settle the betting question. An eye poke can disrupt distance reads, defensive reactions and willingness to exchange. It can also make an otherwise tactical performance look passive. Yet Cong’s larger sample already shows a fighter whose offense produces decisions more often than finishes. Bettors should not treat one post-fight explanation as proof that a radically more aggressive version will appear next time.
The late urgency came after Silva had built the fight
The central issue was not simply that Cong lost. It was when she ceded ground on the scorecards. Dropping the first two rounds to all three judges forced her into a narrower path over the remaining 15 minutes, and winning the fifth could not repair the early deficit.
Cong’s explanation offers a plausible mechanism for that delay: compromised vision can interfere with reading entries and counters, especially for a striker operating at range. But the available packet contains no medical finding, foul count or round-by-round striking totals from the bout. There is no basis to quantify how much the eye contact changed her performance or whether it fully explains the lack of urgency.
That distinction is important for future round betting. If the Silva performance was primarily an isolated response to impaired vision, Cong’s next opponent could face her usual output much earlier. Her career rate stands at 6.22 significant strikes landed per minute with 56 percent accuracy, while she absorbs 2.19 per minute and owns 63 percent striking defense. Those are not the numbers of a consistently inactive striker.
