Renato Moicano’s grappling gives Tom Nolan a different five-round test
The lightweight main event pairs Nolan’s higher striking output and 11-year age advantage with the most accomplished submission threat he has faced in the available sample.
Renato Moicano and Tom Nolan meet in a five-round lightweight main event Saturday at the Meta APEX, with two ranked fighters separated by contrasting timelines and a narrow betting market. MMA Mania’s fight-day preview positioned the matchup as a generational test: the 37-year-old No. 12 lightweight against a 26-year-old contender ranked No. 14.
The verified market was tighter but more consistent than that framing might suggest. As of Friday afternoon, Moicano ranged from -120 to -125 across eight tracked sportsbooks. Nolan was available from -102 to +105. That spread makes line shopping meaningful, particularly on Nolan: +105 instead of -102 materially changes the break-even requirement in a fight with no broad market consensus.
This is not simply experience against youth. Moicano’s route runs through layered takedown entries, top control and submissions. Nolan’s route requires him to preserve enough space and energy to keep his output advantage relevant over 25 minutes. The clash between those mechanisms matters more than either fighter’s recent winning streak.

Moicano can turn Nolan’s offense into grappling entries
Moicano lands 4.1 significant strikes per minute with 49% accuracy, but his striking numbers do not fully describe the threat he creates. Across 19 bouts with round data, he has landed 21 takedowns, accumulated 40 control minutes and attempted seven submissions. His career rate sits at 1.68 takedowns per 15 minutes, and seven of his 13 archived wins came by submission.

That finishing profile has held across a meaningful 20-bout archive, though it should not be treated as proof that every favorable grappling matchup ends early. Moicano has also won four decisions, and the five times he has been finished show that his own downside is substantial when exchanges turn against him.
The key interaction is Nolan’s willingness to operate at range while remaining active enough to expose his hips during combinations and kicks. Nolan stands four inches taller, but his 73-inch reach exceeds Moicano’s by only one inch. The visual size gap therefore overstates the distance advantage available to him. Moicano does not need to cross a huge reach deficit before connecting his hands or entering on the legs.
