Tom Nolan’s City Kickboxing move raises the ceiling — and the uncertainty — against Renato Moicano
Nolan has changed his training environment before his first UFC main event, but the matchup still turns on whether his grappling defence can hold across five rounds.
Tom Nolan has made the largest camp change of his UFC run days before the largest assignment of it. Sherdog reported that the 26-year-old permanently relocated from Australia to City Kickboxing in Auckland after a two-week trial, made the decision before receiving the Renato Moicano booking and cited the gym’s depth of UFC training partners and coaches.
Nolan, ranked No. 14 at lightweight, meets No. 12 Moicano in Saturday’s five-round main event at the Meta APEX. The relocation matters because it potentially changes the quality and variety of Nolan’s preparation. It does not yet prove that any specific part of his game has improved.
That distinction should govern the betting response. A new room can influence development, but camp news alone cannot establish better takedown defence, cleaner pacing or safer decision-making. Those are the exact variables Nolan must address against Moicano.

The matchup is narrower than the physical dimensions suggest
At 6-foot-3, Nolan stands four inches taller than Moicano. His reach advantage, however, is only one inch, 73 to 72. This is not a matchup in which height automatically guarantees long-range control.

Nolan does carry the higher career striking output, landing 4.84 significant strikes per minute to Moicano’s 4.10. He also absorbs more: 3.74 per minute against Moicano’s 3.55. The defensive gap is more pronounced, with Nolan stopping 48% of significant strikes and Moicano defending 59%.
The target distributions point to different offensive emphases. Nolan has landed 268 significant strikes across 13 tracked rounds: 135 to the head, 86 to the body and 47 to the legs. Nearly one-third of his recorded offense has gone to the body. Moicano has landed 740 across 40 rounds, with 538 directed to the head, 71 to the body and 131 to the legs.
