Merab Dvalishvili’s untreated nose injury adds a new variable to Petr Yan trilogy
Dvalishvili’s pace-heavy style requires clean breathing across five rounds, but his durability and the pair’s decision history limit the case for an injury-driven bet.
Merab Dvalishvili enters Saturday’s five-round trilogy with Petr Yan carrying a physical concern that cuts directly across the machinery of his game. Bloody Elbow reported that Dvalishvili broke his nose in two places during training, declined surgery and has left coach Ray Longo concerned about bleeding, breathing and sustaining his work for 25 minutes.
That disclosure matters before UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi because Dvalishvili does not win by waiting for isolated moments. His career production—5.97 takedowns per 15 minutes, 4.42 significant strikes landed per minute and 107 control minutes across 60 tracked rounds—comes from repeatedly forcing exchanges. Any restriction that compromises his breathing could make that cycle harder to maintain.
It does not, by itself, establish a bet. The market already has Yan priced as the favorite, and the available data cannot tell us whether Dvalishvili’s breathing is actually impaired or whether the nose will have any functional effect.

The injury threatens Dvalishvili’s process, not just his appearance
Dvalishvili has landed 119 takedowns across 17 bouts with round-level data. His 35% takedown accuracy is not especially efficient in isolation, but efficiency is not the point of his approach. He creates value through the number of attempts and the cumulative cost of defending them. His 107 control minutes more than double Yan’s 42, despite the two men having comparable tracked samples of 60 and 58 rounds.

That makes Longo’s concern about a full 25 minutes more important than the possibility of visible blood. Dvalishvili needs to keep entering, driving, disengaging and restarting. If the injury interferes with breathing, it could reduce the repeat volume that supports both his takedown count and his striking output. A lower-output version of Dvalishvili would spend more time in Yan’s preferred phase and provide fewer opportunities to bank control.
